If you want the perfect golf day, from start to finish, then you want to be sure to tee it up at the Lynx Ridge Golf Club in Calgary because a smooth day is what this course, and its amenities, is all about.
Matt Kirlin, Assistant General Manager at the northwest Calgary club, said the course that stretches out from 5,200 yards to over 7,000, is a true test of one’s game. With five different teeing areas, “There’s something for everybody,” distance-wise, he noted.
“We opened in 2000 with two nines that play significantly different,” he began about his track which he agrees is a good test of skill. “The front nine has a bunch of elevation changes, more trees. Our main motto is ‘It’s a golfer’s golf club,’ and what we mean by that is it’s an experience all around. Just that seamless from start to finish.”
Speaking of seamless. Lynx Ridge has a phenomenal 32-stall driving range which allows players to warm up properly prior to their round, or spend time on the range perfecting an imperfect science.
“We’ve modeled our range after a gentleman named Mike Bender, who’s a top-50 instructor in the U.S. Our range is a model of what he teaches out of, so that’s kind of cool. It’s pretty much a one-of-a-kind driving range, that’s for sure,” Kirlin explained of this unique set-up.
One thing that Kirlin finds attractive with Lynx Ridge is the fact it is walkable, something that more people are beginning to do these days. “Walking is becoming a huge part of golf (again) and I’d say 90 per cent of our players walk, which is good!”
The one thing Kirlin explained about this track is that it is “Fairly tough. We do have lots of elevation changes and water on 16 of 18 holes. It’s quite scenic when it comes to that,” and with the addition of 1,500 trees five years ago, hitting fairways and greens is the key to success here.
While they’ve been meeting players’ needs over the past 19 years, Lynx Ridge isn’t resting on its laurels. To that end, they’ve made some upgrades for the coming season, said Kirlin.
“We’ve fully renovated the whole upstairs, our two banquet rooms and restaurant. Brand new furniture in the lounge including tables and chairs. Brand new patio furniture. A brand new bar set-up. Basically, when you walk through the doors at Lynx Ridge this year, it’s a whole new clubhouse,” that also includes an updated pro shop and halfway house that have been combined to further enhance that seamless feel one gets at this Calgary course.
Also topping the list of changes this coming season is the return of Executive Chef Jim Lowey, who was at the club from 2004 through 2010. And he comes with an outstanding resume´ forged at Lynx Ridge.
“While he was here, we won an award for the Best Brunch in Calgary and the Best Pasta Night in Calgary,” so that’s something for customers to look forward to this season. “We’re really excited to have Jimmy back and it’s definitely going to bring our food options to the next level,” Kirlin proclaimed.
League play takes place on Tuesday, both in the daytime and evening, for ladies. The men gather for their playdate on Wednesday, with seniors on Monday and the junior group takes to the layout on Sunday afternoons.
